Information obtained from William Wilemon this C-1A
is now being operated by the owner, Duane Doyle, out of the Santa Rosa, CA
Charles Schultz Airport and will be donated to the Pacific Coast Air Museum at
the same location. In theory the Trader will be kept in flying condition
but it will remain to be seen how long that lasts until the Museum takes it out
of service due to the high costs of flight operation. However, at this
point the Museum has made a video to promote it for airshows on the west coast.

In April of 2009 I spoke with Tom Reilly, who is the
owner of Vintage Aircraft, and used to own the Flying Tigers Restoration
Museum at the Kissimmee, FL Airport. He informed me that 136534 is now
owned by Tom Blair and it is now in the hangar that previously housed Tom
Reilly's operation in Kissimmee. None of the photos show the N-number on the aircraft.

"Miss Belle" last flew August 2002 and crash
landed due to engine failure. It is being rebuilt as shown in the 2005
photo posted on Airliners below. Owner Doug Goss plans to have "Miss Belle"
flying again in 2013.
A January 2013 update from Crew Member Robert
Eichkorn:
"We have hung the right (#2) engine
back on the C-1A and are currently plumbing it out. Following that, we will be
pulling the left engine/mount off and building up the QEC for that side. We
have both engines back from Anderson
Aeromotive (zero-timed) and both replacement props back from Maxwell Propeller
(overhauled). Our first airshow is now booked for mid-June (Thunder Over
Michigan – Ypsilanti, MI) and we are also planning to spend the week at Oshkosh
in July."

C-1A |
I was able to visit the Lone Star Flight Museum in March of 2009 and the
situation with this Trader is not pretty. Unfortunately, 146052 went under
water during Hurricane Ike in September 2008. The Director of Maintenance
for the Museum told me that the estimated repair of the saltwater damage to make
it airworthy, which he estimated at $500,000, was not cost effective.
Currently a C-1A can be purchased for $75,000. The fate of 146052 is yet
undetermined. Hopefully it will at least be maintained as a static
aircraft. Several other aircraft, including a rare Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon
and a Consolidated PBY went under about 7 feet of water also. I was able
to take many photos of the Trader, which are linked below.

This Tracker was moved into the Museum some
time in late 2007.
Information obtained from John Benton 146034 was indeed restored and is
now back on display. John provides this history on the aircraft:
The C-1A at the
museum was the 64th of the 87 built. It is Bureau number
(serial#) 146034. It was last flown in March 1987, and placed on
permanent display near the northeast corner of the base the following
month. #146034 accumulated 15,502 hours of flight time, making a total
of 2439 arrested landings and 714 catapult assisted launches from
aircraft carriers. #146034 was operated by a number of squadrons
and ships, including VR-24 from NAF Sigonella, Italy, VRC-40 from NAS
Norfolk, VA. It's last assignment was aboard the USS Independence. The
aircraft was one of three C-1A's operated from NAS Willow Grove by the
Independence's COD Crew while that ship was receiving its last major
overhaul at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyards.
John has also provided a photo of the engine start of 146034 and the
other two Traders at Willow Grove for their last flight in 1987.
John is unsure which aircraft is 146034 as all have the nose marking 62
for the USS Independence.

Tucson, AZ |
Grumman Serial
Number 68. Was registered as N32709, which was cancelled in 2002.
This was formerly listed as being in storage but it is actually on
display on AMARC's Celebrity Row which is part of the bus tour that can
be purchased at the Pima Air Museum. On the tour it is on the
right side of the bus and is one of the first aircraft encountered after
turning on to Celebrity Row.

Both the first and last Traders are
in storage at AMARC. The status and existence of all of the
Traders at AMARC is questionable. In discussion with the folks at
Marsh Aviation in Mesa, AZ I was told that AMARC had started to cut up
these aircraft late in 2008 but that process was put on hold by the
Brazilian Government which is attempting to find funding to convert them
into Marsh Turbo Tankers. During my bus tours of AMARC in May of
2009 and 2010, I did not see any C-1As with the exception of 146038 that is on
display at Celebrity Row. But then it is a big place and I could
not see everything on the grounds. |
